World Book Day

World Book Day is celebrated every year on April 23. UNESCO undertakes the responsibility of the event. With the help of the event, UNESCO aims to inculcate reading habits among people, especially the youth and highlight the various issues surrounding authors, publishers and other related parties.

The first ever World Book Day was celebrated on April 23, 1995. The date as decided by UNESCO as it was also the death and birth anniversary of William Shakespeare, a world famous author. The date also coincided with the death anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes, who was a noted Spanish author. Some other well known authors whose birth or death anniversary falls on this day are Maurice Druon, Josep Pla and Halldor Laxness.

The idea of the day was taken from a Spanish tradition. April 23rd has always been celebrated as “The Rose Day” in Spain (Barcelona). On this day, people exchanged roses for showing their love and support, much like the Valentine’s Day. However, in 1926, when Miguel de Cervantes dies on the day, people exchanged books instead of roses in order to commemorate the death of the great author. The tradition continues to this day in Spain and that’s from where the idea of the World Book Day came about.

There is also the tradition of organizing a reading marathon spanning two days in Spain, at the end of which an author is given the coveted Miguel de Cervantes prize by the King of Spain. In Sweden, writing competitions are organized across schools and colleges.

So.... what books are you going to read today??? ;-)

Google Celebrates Earth Day

Open up Google today and a beautiful green landscape complete with streams, a bright sun, birds and trees greets you. It’s time for a doodle again and today folks at Google are celebrating Earth Day with this interactive, animated doodle.

There’s a play button on the doodle, right on the sun and when you click the sun, begins the amazing journey of Earth through its various seasons.

Celebrated on 22nd April, Earth Day was first proposed by John McConnell in 1969 at the UNESCO Conference in San Fransisco. However, he put forth the idea to celebrate the day on 21st March. Soon after his suggestion was put forth, Gaylord Nelson, a US senator proposed having 22nd April as Earth Day instead. His suggestion was taken up and since then, the 22nd of April is celebrated as  International Mother Earth Day every year.

Spring Fair 2013

Next Friday (19 / 04 / 13) we will celebrate the Spring Fair. As far as I know you have been working on the different stuff you will bring and things you will do and  get ready for your stall on that day. I just hope we all have a great day and we should collect as much as possible.

REMEMBER: All the money that we will collect will be for charity, and as we did last year we have chosen the important NGO.... "Asociación Española contra el Cáncer".
So, we should devote our most serious efforts to collect lots of money for this organization.
